Gábor Góbi

The conceptual starting point for A Melting Collection is the social impact of global warming, specifically the oppressive experience of climate anxiety. Gábor Góbi's works reflect on this theme through metaphors solidified in material. The "melting" forms of his objects simultaneously evoke the erosive processes of nature and the image of an uncertain world. The objects featured in the exhibition are based on found wooden elements, which are supplemented with additional wood and natural stone. After carving, the scorching of the wood is not only a gesture of shaping but also a protective and surface treatment procedure. The carved stone is then placed on the wood, and the two materials seemingly "merge." However, this melting is not a physical process but a conscious visual metaphor: it recalls the transformative work of erosion. The previous life of the found objects often remains legible in the finished works. For Góbi, it is important to respect the material culture of the past and preserve craft traditions: saving discarded elements is both an ecological and cultural statement. The mirror presented in the exhibition receives special emphasis. Its base is an old window sash salvaged during a clear-out, which, given a new function, becomes a space for self-reflection. The mirror is not merely a utilitarian object but a symbolic surface: it turns the gaze back to the viewer, making the global climate crisis a personal responsibility.
